Bio-IT Briefs: Dec 7

A new PricewaterhouseCoopers study says that the market for personalized medicine in the US is already at $232 billion, and it is projected to grow 11% annually. PWC projects that the market for a more personalized approach to health and wellness will grow to as much as $452 billion by 2015. Read more.

Sigma-Aldrich has announced the launch of a unique life science-focused application for Facebook. Developed and marketed by Sigma Life Science, the 'What's Your Favorite Gene?' application is the first and currently only application of its kind available on Facebook, and provides a platform that can enable scientists and researchers to network with each other and facilitate discussion based on their favorite genes, identifiable via gene functionality and biological pathways. The application also allows researchers to post and share gene information using gene details and associated pathways and interactors from Sigma-Aldrich's award-winning online search platform, 'Your Favorite Gene powered by Ingenuity'. Read more.

Caliper Life Sciences has launched the Living Image 4.0 software for in vivo imaging systems. The software drives the more than 800 Caliper IVIS systems. The new version includes advanced imagaing wizards, improved surface tomography, new color templates, and 3D vizualization tools. Read more.

MolPort, an innovator in rare chemical trading has joined forces with InhibOx, a leading developer of novel and effective computational methods for drug discovery. MolPort focuses on developing rare chemical trading platform and builds database of commercially available compounds. Now the company provides this database and its updates to computational chemists at InhibOx where they incorporate it into the virtual screening procedures. Once they identify suitable lead candidates, MolPort offers to efficiently source these compounds and deliver to the client for testing. Read more.

HP Enterprise Services has announced that it has signed a seven-year infrastructure services agreement with Eli Lilly and Company. The agreement provides a flexible and scalable foundation to support Lilly’s technology needs and will improve its ability to collaborate with external partners. Under the agreement, HP will manage Lilly’s employee workplace computing and messaging environment across its global operations. Services include hosted messaging for more than 45,000 mailboxes across all company sites, as well as service desk and site support services for more than 60,000 employee desktops, notebooks and handheld devices in 84 countries, with service desk delivered in multiple languages. Read more.

GATC Biotech and Complete Genomics have announced a research collaboration to sequence several human genomes from samples provided by GATC. The companies will collaborate to analyze the data obtained from the research project. Complete Genomics will sequence and assemble the genomes and provide GATC with detected variants including single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) and indels. GATC will then perform additional bioinformatics analysis such as comparison of the variant data of different genomes. In addition, the company will refine the data with the aim of providing researchers and clinicians with relevant genomic details to advance their understanding of the genetic causes of disease. The pilot project has started and the first sequencing data will be evaluated by GATC soon. Read more.

Turning Genomics Data into Practical Insight
Sponsored by SGI

With worldwide sequencing capacity approaching 13 quadrillion DNA bases annually turning genomics data into knowledge is a true computational challenge. Read this paper and learn how the SGI UV coherent shared memory platform can:

  • Speed results time while cost competitively tackling the most difficult computational problems across all omics disciplines.
  • Push performance by scaling to extraordinary levels, up to 256 sockets (2,560 cores, 4,096 threads) per single system (one OS image).

Provide support for up to 16TB of coherent shared memory in a single system image enabling extreme efficiency across a wide range of compute demands.

New Complimentary Market Survey…
Collaborations and Communications Within Drug Discovery Research
Sponsored by Accelrys
This survey was conducted by the Cambridge Healthtech Media Group in January, 2012. It was sponsored by Accelrys related to their HEOS initiative to gather valid information around externalizing collaborative research while improving communications in the cloud. With 310 qualified industry respondents the survey findings reveal useful usage and trends patterns.  An insightful follow-on discussion and webinar related to this survey, and the HEOS by Scynexis SaaS portal is also available on the Bio-IT World website for complementary viewing.
