Medidata Solutions, a Manhattan electronic data capture firm, has won a major contract from the British government. The National Cancer Research Network (NCRN) picked the company after a two-year search. By using Medidata’s technology in eight clinical trials, but potentially expanding to hundreds, the United Kingdom is hoping to simplify processes for 500 staff members spread throughout the nation.

Thermo Electron secured a major contract with Altana Pharma to install a fully integrated Ultra High Throughput Screening system. Altana focuses on identifying new therapeutic approaches in the fields of respiratory inflammation, oncology, and gastroenterology.

The Commission of the European Union has awarded 9 million euros over five years for a network for excellence — ENFIN — that will make computational systems biology accessible to bench scientists throughout Europe and beyond.

Varian acquired PL International Limited, and its subsidiaries including U.K.-based Polymer Laboratories Ltd., for approximately $42 million.
