Rely on Scientists to Drive IT
What is the history of your organization’s involvement in life sciences?
von Bohlen: Since its foundation in March 1997, the company has been oriented toward the life sciences market. The original vision is still in place, namely that seamless information- and knowledge-management systems will contribute to today’s improvements and future enhancements in life sciences discovery—and that these systems need to be designed and driven by the scientists who need and use them. Therefore, the most effective life sciences products require input from the scientists that run drug discovery as well as the developers that build these solutions in our organization.
What is your vision for the development of the life sciences market?
von Bohlen: My personal motivation is to build something novel and unique for the sake of human health by combining biotechnology and information technologies in an unprecedented way. It’s also to improve speed and quality (productivity) in life sciences R&D and to serve the healthcare stakeholders of tomorrow by helping medical doctors, patients, and customers on their way to individualized and personalized medicine.
What organizational assets have you developed to serve this community?
von Bohlen: LION is a matrix organization with several strong pillars. In IT, we have software technologies, software development, and professional services, while our internal drug discovery efforts focus on the nuclear receptors. We rely on strong business development as well as on a global sales and marketing organization on the business side. As a project-oriented organization we drive the company strongly through certain programs. Finally, we build on core competencies in our different sites in the U.S.A., the U.K., and Germany.
What products and services does your company provide to the life sciences market?
von Bohlen: The SRS data-integration platform to integrate different databases irrespective of content and file structure; application software modules; the SCOUT product range, dedicated to specific needs and applications; integrated IT solutions called i-biology® that allow efficient integration and decision support management of data and information across the different disciplines involved in life sciences R&D; and professional services such as customization, consulting, and training.
With this range of products and IT support, LION optimizes and accelerates each individual step in the discovery process. It becomes possible to conduct research in parallel steps rather than traditional methods, speeding up the overall discovery time required. In our laboratories we conduct IT-driven drug discovery on the molecular class of nuclear receptors. The offering will be validated by preclinical candidates that are on their way into clinical trials.
