3rd Millennium Inc.
Founder and CEO
Attracted by Challenge and Talent in Bioscience
What is the history of your organization’s involvement in life sciences?
Dweck: 3rd Millennium has been providing bioinformatics consulting and systems development services to the biotech and pharmaceutical markets for five years. Three years ago we decided to focus exclusively on these markets for several compelling reasons, including:
• The problems we face developing systems to support life science research and discovery are more challenging and interesting than in other markets;
• The client personnel that we work with are highly intelligent, work really hard, and are enormously committed to their work. That’s a good fit for our personnel who share the same characteristics; and
• The systems that we develop for this market must handle many types and sources of data and present them in many individualized ways to researchers. This takes quite a bit of skill in database design, which is an area where we have tremendous competency.
What is your vision for the development of the life sciences market?
Dweck: One of the best things about working in this market is that we get to work with companies who are trying to cure serious illnesses. Having a small hand in their success is personally rewarding to me.
The systems design and development problems that this industry faces will continue to grow as the volumes and types of data expand. Five years ago we were dealing exclusively with genomics data. Two years ago we began developing our internal efforts to prepare for the next wave of proteomics development. For the last year we have been working internally on pathway systems. As a company, we try to stay at least a year ahead, technologically, of what our clients’ needs will be.
What organizational assets have you developed to serve this community?
Dweck: We have been able to assemble a company full of life scientists, database developers, and software engineers who can be grouped into teams. The benefit to the client is that there will be 3rd Millennium people at each level needed to interface with them (i.e., our Ph.D.-level scientists will be able to gather the requirements directly from their scientists and our database developers can interact directly with their DBAs).
What products and services does your company provide to the life sciences market?
Dweck: 3rd Millennium provides bioinformatics consulting along with custom system design and development to support the research and discovery efforts of biotech and pharmaceutical clients. We do this through a well-honed needs analysis methodology followed by a thorough specification and design phase. This provides our clients and our developers with a clear blueprint that will guide a well-managed development effort.
