EMC Upgrades Documentum

EMC has announced a major revision to its enterprise content management platform Documentum. The new offering brings together collaboration, federated search, and retention management capabilities into one system. New in this release is EMC Documentum Client for Outlook, which lets an Outlook user access all of the features of Documentum that are available in the traditional Documentum Web-based interface. With this client software, users can also save e-mail messages and attachments in a Documentum repository. Another new feature with this release is a federated search capability. Using this capability, a researcher can search content in Documentum and other repositories.

EMC has also added new business and process services that use the software’s underlying architecture. Among these new services are the EMC Documentum Collaboration Services, which let researchers share information through the use of notes, contextual folders, discussions, and workspace rooms; and the EMC Documentum Business Process Engine, which lets companies set up work queue management processes that include such things as automated task assignment, prioritization, load balancing, and escalation.

SGI Rounds Out Prism Product Line

SGI has expanded its Prism line of high-performance visualization systems by adding a workstation-like unit. The new Prism Deskside can be configured with one or two Intel Itanium 2 processors and up to two graphics processor units (GPUs). The Linux-based system supports up to 24 GB of memory, so it can be used by researchers to visualize, analyze, and manipulate large data sets. Researchers who use SGI’s older IRIX visualization systems can move applications over to the Prism system using an application called QuickTransit, which does on-the-fly binary translation and does not require any modification to the older applications.

Microway Workstation Packs Performance Punch

Microway announced the WhisperStation, a high-performance workstation for compute-intensive applications. The WhisperStation features either dual AMD Opteron or Intel Xeon EM64T processors and up to 2 GB of memory. The system includes an NVIDIA FX1300 PCI Express Graphics engine and a Viewsonic 20-inch LCD monitor. The workstation also includes ultra-quiet fans and power supply, according to Microway. Noise reduction is increasingly becoming a concern as ever more powerful fans are required to cool the higher-performance processors being used in new workstations. The WhisperStation is available with either 64-bit Linux or Windows as the operating system. The system can be custom configured to include large hard disks and RAID storage.

Cray Upgrades the X1

Cray Inc. announced the Cray X1E, an upgraded version of its well-known Cray X1 supercomputer. The Cray X1E, like its predecessor, is designed to handle very high-end computational tasks. The Cray X1E delivers nearly three times the peak processing power of the X1, according to Cray. Specifically, a single X1E cabinet offers between 819 GigaFLOPS to 2.3 TeraFLOPS of peak processing power. By combining cabinets, an X1E system can be scaled to deliver up to 147 TeraFLOPS. Systems are available with 16 to 8,192 processors and 32 GB to 32 TB of memory. Cray offers both air-cooled and water-cooled versions of the X1E.

Symantec Updates Data Recovery Software

Symantec announced LiveState Recovery Manager 3.0, a new version of its centralized data protection management software. Using LiveState Recovery Manager, a network administrator can monitor the backup status of remote servers and systems and get information such as how many devices are enabled for recovery, how many have jobs scheduled, how many have missed scheduled jobs, and how many are offline. The software uses wizards that help IT managers define backup policies for servers or groups of servers. Additionally, the software helps IT managers troubleshoot storage and backup-related problems by providing information, such as the disk size and amount of disk space used, for all servers.

HP Boots ProLiant Line

HP added two higher-performance servers to its ProLiant product line. The HP ProLiant DL580 G3 and the HP ProLiant ML570 G3 are based on the Xeon Processor MP, which uses Intel’s Extended Memory 64 Technology (EM64T) that supports both 32-bit and 64-bit applications. Both servers are designed to use up to four of these new 3.33 GHz clock-speed processors. HP claims these systems deliver about a 40 percent application performance improvement over similar ProLiant servers that were based on the previous version of the Xeon processor.

Software Helps Doping Control Lab Streamline Results Management
Sponsored by Waters
The Karolinska University Hospital’s Doping Control Lab tests thousands of samples annually for stimulants, diuretics, and other masking agents. Increased regulatory pressure and new technologies increased the number of samples analyzed creating data management challenges. Waters® NuGenesis® Scientific Data Management System and TargetLynx™ Application Manager software were used to reduce the time required to calculate, review and search results.

Rising Clinical Trial Delays and Costs - Addressing the Cause, Not the Symptoms

medidata podcastProtocol complexity is taking a toll on clinical study speed and efficiency: increasingly complicated and ambitious protocols are not only burdening sites and study volunteers but are also prolonging trials and increasing expenses. In response, sponsors have turned to global study placement, restructured site relationships and new site management practices, but the problem remains.

This podcast will discuss:

  • Why these responses address only the symptoms, not the underlying cause, of rising clinical trial delays and costs.
  • Results of a recent joint Tufts University / Medidata Solutions study.
  • New metrics benchmarking protocol design trends.
  • Systematic protocol design improvements and why they are essential to clinical trial performance excellence.

Speakers: Ken Getz, Senior Research Fellow at the Tufts Center for the Study of Drug Development, and Ed Seguine, General Manager, Trial Planning Solutions at Medidata.
