How has your company adapted and responded to the changing economic climate in the past five years when so many others companies did not?
CambridgeSoft has been growing aggressively, both sales and profits, over the last five years, with growth rates more recently approaching 40-50 percent per year. This has been accomplished with our leading applications such as our Knowledge Management-based E-Notebook, broader integrated offerings of Enterprise Solutions, Desktop Software, and Scientific Databases, and passing on lower Software and Service IT costs to our customers based upon a global sourcing worker network.
What is your vision for the future of the life sciences market over the next several years?
CambridgeSoft sees these trends continuing for the next several years, as our customers are facing an increasing competitive market, and have been able to increase productivity with our leading applications such as our Knowledge Management-based E-Notebook to improve collaboration and IP protection across research, discovery, development, trials and manufacturing operating excellence. We have seen an increased uptake in both E-Notebook and Inventory in GxP regulated areas, again driven by return on investment analyses. Our pharmaceutical, biotechnology and chemical customers need broader integrated offerings of Enterprise Solutions, Desktop Software and Scientific Databases which are integrated so they focus on their business as opposed to working with costly system integrators to have disparate offerings developed without an attempt to ever have them work together. Finally, our customers require overall lower Software and Service IT costs to be based upon a global sourcing worker network.
What products and services does your company provide and what special capabilities do they offer the life sciences market?
CambridgeSoft offers today the broadest offerings of integrated enterprise solutions, desktop software and scientific databases. In the knowledge management area, our E-Notebook was the first to market in 2000, and has become the industry choice of global pharmaceuticals. The world has become flat, and e-notebooks allow companies to exchange scientific documents globally in a consistent format. A common E-Notebook environment empowers global research across chemistry and biology research, and ensures discovery, process chemistry, development, and manufacturing compliance. For inventory management, CambridgeSoft is the only company providing a solution that works from manufacturing and GxP regulated areas, to R&D reagent inventory needs, and extends into high-throughput screening support. And our investment in the biology area has been well received, with many biotechnology and global pharmaceutical companies adopting BioAssay for its particular strength for in vivo screening, but also used in screening applications through HTS. That Inventory and BioAssay are also usable as modules within the E-Notebook framework further distinguishes our integrated enterprise solutions.
CambridgeSoft Desktop Software has been the foundation of the company, serving over a million users with the richest and broadest easy-to-use scientific applications for chemists and biologists, with ChemOffice, ChemDraw, BioOffice and BioDraw.
Finally, CambridgeSoft brings to market the broadest offering of integrated desktop software, enterprise solutions and scientific databases to serve pharmaceutical, biotechnology and chemical customers. Although customers may purchase applications separately from several suppliers, as opposed to CambridgeSoft’s integrated offering, the customer will then face the never-ending high costs of attempted system integration of these disparate applications from multiple suppliers.
Partnerships are an effective way to track life science advances and ensure that your company delivers timely products and services. Which life sciences companies or organizations have you partnered with or invested in and why?
CambridgeSoft has partnered with customers in the life science industry to develop this broad array of integrated offerings, including Merck, GlaxoSmithKline, AstraZeneca, Organon, Array BioPharma, Wolters Kluwer, and Fujitsu to name a few. These partners have worked with CambridgeSoft to insure we are bringing the latest technology to enhance their productivity across all their integrated work group functions, and have included substantial collaborative efforts in development of E-Notebook, Inventory, and BioAssay. And all of these resulting in deployments in a variety of contexts spanning discovery, development, formulations, and manufacturing.
What are your most exciting products and initiatives in development, and how will they improve life science research?
The CambridgeSoft E-Notebook has the most flexible architecture in its class which we have tailored to workflow requirements across 15 specific disciplines. This initiative has provided our customers with the opportunity to pull together all their scientific knowledge into one integrated solution. We expect this offering to grow in both breadth and depth over the next several years and be unmatched in providing the most significant industry productivity gains.

Where do you see your company in five years?
We see CambridgeSoft continuing to bring to market the broadest offering of industry leading integrated desktop software, enterprise solutions, and scientific databases, all provided cost effectively to serve the pharmaceutical, biotechnology, and chemical customers.
