Symyx Upgrades Electronic Lab Notebook

By Salvatore Salamone Bio-IT World

Symyx has announced IntelliChem iELN version 5.0, the first upgrade to the electronic lab notebook (eLN) since the company acquired the software package last November.

The new release of the intelligent eLN includes a number new tools for parallel execution of experiments and enterprise workflow, as well as improved security and performance.

For example, with regard to parallel execution, the software lets scientists create a set of experiments by varying reagents and reaction conditions. This helps a scientist more quickly screen and optimize reactions.

On the workflow front, IntelliChem iELN lets a company set up procedures that ensure documents are reviewed and witnessed. For instance, in the 5.0 release, administrators can link a workflow to a lab document’s use (e.g., discovery experiments might have one workflow, while quality control experiments might have another). Administrators can also schedule reminder e-mails to occur after a set time and allow several users simultaneously review documents.

Other enhancements in the 5.0 release include the ability to set user and group permission rights at the document, notebook, and repository levels. Additionally, the package’s text editor now includes enhanced features such as improved table functions, streamlined symbol entry, and the ability to export documents in pdf format.

Symyx sees the eLN software as being a natural fit with its existing line of collaborative discovery, formulation, and synthesis tools. That point was brought home when the eLN was acquired last November. At that time, Symyx’s chairman and CEO Steven Goldby said: “The impetus for the merger came from our mutual customers, who suggested we find ways to link our complementary capabilities. We expect IntelliChem’s intelligent eLN software combined with our Renaissance software suite will create…a compelling system for integrating and unifying chemical research and development data, enabling improvements in the efficiency of research in the pharmaceutical and chemical industries.”

The Symyx IntelliChem version 5.0 is available now.
