Bio-IT Briefs

Accelrys Inc. announced its NanoBiology Initiative's first member organization: Italy's University of Trieste. The Accelrys NanoBiology Initiative is an international collaborative framework to develop the scientific solutions that address critical challenges in drug delivery, diagnostics and bioengineering through multi-scale modeling. A leader in the computational analysis of nanomaterials for cancer detection, the University of Trieste will join Accelrys scientists, Initiative members, and technical advisors at the NanoBiology Initiative's inaugural meeting being held on September 25th at the Sheraton Commander in Cambridge, Massachusetts. The Oracle Remote Data Capture Onsite electronic data capture (EDC) system is designed to accelerate and simplify the collection of clinical data and the deployment of EDC studies at clinical trial sites. The Onsite interface, which can be applied on top of Oracle Remote Data Capture v4.5.1, lets site personnel interact with case report forms (CRFs) electronically. It also performs robust online edit checks instantaneously in the data entry environment, invoking a discrepancy management module from the CRF to capture, route and resolve discrepancies. The CRFs are represented as icons and illustrate the status of the data (clean, verified, and/or approved), letting users perform a fast, visual inspection of each CRF. Users can back up approvals with electronic signatures to  assist in complying with regulations regarding Electronic Records and Electronic Signatures (21 CFR Part 11). Website: www.oracle.com

Tripos Inc. announced plans to support a robust open-source workflow platform developed by researchers at the University of Konstanz, Germany. A preview version of the Tripos Chemistry Extensions package for the KNIME open-source workflow platform is being made available today via download from the Tripos corporate Web site at http://www.tripos.com/knime. The KNIME platform, developed by Prof. Michael R. Berthold and his colleagues at the University of Konstanz, will enable Tripos' customers to visually create and execute scientific workflows based upon a combination of Tripos and third-party discovery informatics products. Nextrials Inc announced that ArQule Inc.has selected its clinical trial data collection and management product, Prism, for use in an ongoing Phase I/II clinical trial. ArQule will deploy Prism to replace its paper-based data collection system in a dose escalation study of the lead product from the company’s Cancer Survival Protein (CSP) drug discovery platform. Prism is the designed specifically for the biotechnology, pharmaceutical and medical device markets and pulls together all of the components of managing clinical trials research into a comprehensive, web-enabled system. Turning Genomics Data into Practical Insight
Sponsored by SGI

With worldwide sequencing capacity approaching 13 quadrillion DNA bases annually turning genomics data into knowledge is a true computational challenge. Read this paper and learn how the SGI UV coherent shared memory platform can:

  • Speed results time while cost competitively tackling the most difficult computational problems across all omics disciplines.
  • Push performance by scaling to extraordinary levels, up to 256 sockets (2,560 cores, 4,096 threads) per single system (one OS image).

Provide support for up to 16TB of coherent shared memory in a single system image enabling extreme efficiency across a wide range of compute demands.

New Complimentary Market Survey…
Collaborations and Communications Within Drug Discovery Research
Sponsored by Accelrys
This survey was conducted by the Cambridge Healthtech Media Group in January, 2012. It was sponsored by Accelrys related to their HEOS initiative to gather valid information around externalizing collaborative research while improving communications in the cloud. With 310 qualified industry respondents the survey findings reveal useful usage and trends patterns.  An insightful follow-on discussion and webinar related to this survey, and the HEOS by Scynexis SaaS portal is also available on the Bio-IT World website for complementary viewing.
