2011 Best Practices Winners

The 2011 Bio•IT World Best Practices Awards were announced in April. Grand prize winners in four categories included Merck (nominated by DecisionView); Novartis Institute for BioMedical Research; GlaxoSmithKline (nominated by Ceiba Solutions); and Oxford Nanopore Technologies (nominated by Accelrys). The Judges’ Prize went to CliniWorks and the Editors’ Choice Award was given to Collaborative Drug Discovery for the TB database nominated by the Tuberculosis Research Section, NIAID, NIH and Global Alliance for TB Drug Development.

App Challenge

Elsevier has announced the launch of a series of community challenges to engage scientific research communities, librarians and application developers in the creation and conceptualization of search and discovery applications. The “Apps for Science” challenge asks software developers to create fully operational applications for the SciVerse platform. The “Apps for Library Idea” challenge asks librarians and researchers to propose ideas for information search solutions. Deadlines for both competitions are in the Fall.

Companion Diagnostics Merger

Myriad Genetics has entered into a definitive merger agreement to acquire privately-held Rules-Based Medicine (RBM) of Austin, Texas for $80 million in cash. The deal expands Myriad’s research portfolio into new disease states, including psychiatric disorders, infectious diseases and inflammatory diseases, and adds eight new molecular diagnostic product candidates to Myriad’s pipeline. Myriad also hopes to benefit from RBM’s history of strategic alliances with over 20 major pharmaceutical and biotechnology companies.
