November 3, 2014

November 3, 2014 | Jonathan Rothberg, the founder of two companies — 454 Life Sciences and Ion Torrent — that have played large roles in the next generation sequencing revolution, is touting a new startup from his 4Combinator tech incubator that is developing a low-cost ultrasound device to plug into a smartphone. The new company, Butterfly Network, is integrating ultrasound emitters into a semiconductor chip, to create a device Rothberg claims will be available within 18 months for uses that might include pregnancy management, tumor monitoring, and potentially even cancer treatment.
