Creative Proteomics Lipidomics Platform Boosts Short Chain Fatty Acids Research

May 3, 2022

Lipidomics, a platform developed by Creative Proteomics, is dedicated to providing cutting-edge mass spectrometry (MS)-based lipidomics services for biomedical research institutions, and biotechnological and pharmaceutical companies. The Lipidomics platform now employs gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS) methods to enable fast and accurate qualitative and quantitative analysis of a variety of short-chain fatty acids.

Short-chain fatty acids (SCFA), also known as volatile fatty acids, refer to organic fatty acids with 1-6 carbon atoms. It is mainly produced by the digestion of undigested carbohydrates by anaerobic bacteria in the colon lumen, including acetic acid, propionic acid, butyric acid, valeric acid, isovaleric acid, isobutyric acid, etc. Short-chain fatty acids can maintain intestinal electrolyte balance, induce cancer cell differentiation and apoptosis, and regulate gene expression. Acetic acid, propionic acid, and butyric acid are the main short-chain fatty acids in the gut, which play an important role in regulating intestinal nutrient absorption, hormone production, and energy metabolism.

Past studies have shown that short-chain fatty acid SCFAs play an important role in the prevention and treatment of a range of metabolic syndromes, such as intestinal diseases and certain cancers. In clinical studies, the application of SCFAs can enhance the therapeutic effect of certain immune intestinal diseases (e.g., Crohn's disease, ulcerative colitis, and antibiotic-related diarrhea), but the mechanism is uncertain. This suggests that short-chain fatty acid SCFAs can effectively promote energy metabolism in mammals.

“Our Lipidomics platform now uses gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS) to enable rapid and accurate qualitative and quantitative analysis of a variety of short-chain fatty acids. In addition, we can also use high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC), liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry (LC-MS) methods to determine fatty acids in samples to meet your different needs. We provide a one-stop high-sensitivity quantitative analysis of SCFAs, including SCFAs with C2-C12 carbon chain lengths in various biological materials (feces, serum, etc.),” said Creative Proteomics’s senior scientist.

“Our Lipidomics platform is equipped with advanced instruments, including GC-MS, LC-MS, LC-MS/MS, shot-gun, MALDI-MS, etc. With highly specialized technical capabilities and professional knowledge of mass spectrometry personnel, we are fully prepared to cooperate in the rapidly developing field of lipidomics, and at the same time support your research from research design to final report,” he further added.
